Comparisons Between the iPhone And Android (from an Android user’s POV)

There has been way too many comparisons between the iPhone and Android phones. While this is understandable as the iPhone is the current smartphone to own and Android is the latest and greatest thing there is when it comes to smartphones. Wait, what?

Let me explain. The iPhone, while is great and all - one I'd heartily recommend to anyone wanting a smartphone without the slightest fear of giving a bad recommendation - is not the latest and greatest thing to own any more. Android is where all the buzz is right now, and I foresee this'll continue in the foreseeable future. Will it dethrone the king of the hill? Don't know, don't care. Android is the only real alternative to the venerable iPhone. And to geeks, developers and open-source pundits, it's the phone to own.

So after seeing much Android action, switching from 3 types of ROMs and having run through almost a hundred applications since I got the phone, I have this to say about comparisons. Just don't. Android is not there yet. It's still way too slow. OK sure, it multitasks, and I love it. Heck I won't live without that nifty background notification from my email (work and personal), twitter, facebook and intant messaging software on Android. But the average Joes and Janes don't really care. All they see are stutters during scrolling, pauses when returning to the home screen and tens of seconds of waiting to see that first email or web page, the sub-par camera and the long wait to get to the dialer.

In other words, either the hardware needs to catch up to Android or some serious optimizations need to happen before Android can provide the 'Apple experience'. Some folks seem to think that Apple made some magic happen to the UI of the iPhone and just 'nailed it'. Well, wake up, they did no such thing. Apple came up with a single tasking, fast OS with very responsive and beautiful UI. And this is the main reason I will still not recommend an Android phone to anyone which does not talk and walk like a geek.

So let's stop the comparisons. The iPhone is the king of the hill still. I suspect though that it wont be for long. Would I stop using Android? Nope. This OS was made for people like me.
