I’m On Ubuntu 8.04

screenshot.jpg

That’s right, I’m running Ubuntu on my laptop. Every damn thing works!

  • WLAN drivers - check
  • Logon to WPA network - check
  • Sound drivers - check
  • Installing proprietary stuff (Flash, MP3 codecs, etc.) - check
  • Battery indicator - check
  • Power management - check
  • Sweet looking desktop (think transparencies, window animations, etc.) - check

My my my, Linux has come a long way. In fact, what’s even cooler is that I did not even need to partition my laptop. Everything was installed in Windows XP to a hard drive image. I’m not yet able to browse or see my NTFS partition so this means file sharing is a no-no for now. That sucks since I’ve got 14GB of MP3s stashed on the NTFS partition. So if you wanna dual-boot, be wary of this. I’m sure there’s a way to enable file sharing some how.

DiGi Ambassador Monthly Fee Waived

There were a lot of disgruntled users of the DiGi Ambassador plan when it was changed from a free-all-you-can-call plan to something more down-to-earth. These fees were introduced:

  • call rate identical to 1-Plan
  • ditto for SMS/MMS
  • monthly commitment fee of RM25

The commitment fee was waived for the first 3 months, starting with February. I’m actually fine with this arrangement because even though it’s no longer free, I have no qualms with DiGi’s customer service or network coverage and this plan is the cheapest postpaid plan around. In fact, I’m a happy customer. They’re so unobtrusive I rarely need to call customer service and when something is wrong, it’s fixed fast.

Now the good news - the RM25 is further waived another 3 months :)

I guess DiGi is doing pretty well rewarding its customers. Here’s hoping the monthly commitment would be waived completely.

Sun Tech Days Skipping Malaysia

A check on the locations revealed that Sun isn’t planning to stop by Malaysia this year. I had a blast attending the most recent one about a year ago. Wonder why they decided to skip though, since from the look of things, Java is popular here and Sun Tech Days did manage to pull in quite a large crowd of developers.

Palm OS PDAMill Games Now Free

PDAmill Game Studios has decided to giveaway unlocked versions of their Palm OS games. That’s right, they’re all free. Support and development has been discontinued for these so that goes without saying that if these don’t run on your Palm, the only solution is to delete them. This follows SkinUI which I blogged about earlier.

It’s sad that a lot of developers are abandoning Palm but there’s always hope that when Palm OS II (or whatever they choose to call it) comes out, with hopefully some good hardware to boot, developers will come back to the platform.
