Behold, The Palm Treo 850

Pic from Boy Genius

Only known specs are a 400MHz CPU (unknown type) and 100MB RAM (is this the amount available upon booting?) post OS boot. No details of GPS or WiFi radio rumored to be present.

OK, the hardware looks fine but Windows Mobile again? Come on, how about some Linux love yo?

Source - The Boy Genius Report. Updated: More info at WMExperts and there’s a healthy discussion going on at Treocentral.

Judging from the initial response, it seems most people love the new design (which takes a cue from its Palm OS Centro sibling). I’ll be damned if they can manage to cram all that hardware into a small phone like the Centro. Opinions differ though on the Centro’s size, some say it is too small (keyboard and screen) but others, mostly girls and well… me, thinks it’s so nice to be able to carry a smartphone and minus the size. A fair compromise would be to make it slightly wider while retaining its weight and thickness. Or maybe that’s the reason for having 2 phones (yes, there’s another Treo800w).

First Intel Atom Benchmark

MSI Wind PC e Asus EEEPC 900, Atom VS Celeron, tempo di benchmark!! | Tecnophone.it

I swear to you that means something in Italian. Lucky for the non-Italian speaking folks (that’s you and me), the benchmark result is pretty universal in showing the Intel Atom getting its back whooped pretty good by a Celeron CPU. Looks like the power-saving features does not come without a pretty hefty price. So I guess it’s a toss between performance and power (and maybe heat).

Personally, I can’t really decide if I want a faster performing unit, or one that doesn’t bloody burn my lap after a few hours on the net. Also keep in mind that despite what Intel wants you to believe, namely shaving off a couple of watts from the CPU will result in dramatic improvements in battery life, that’s not really true. A hard drive and large screen will also draw quite a lot of power, so much that it whatever energy-saving you use might matter less. That is one reason to consider the eeePC still since it uses a fairly small screen (7″ & 9″) and a solid-state drive.

Malaysia JUG Meeting for May

Local Java User Group meeting again on May. This time around we Colin Wong from ZoeCity (CEO) to speak about “How to change the world with Web 2.0″. Big words considering there’s no real definition of Web 2.0 ;-)

Still, the talk by an ex-Google employee got my attention and I’ll be going. Anyone interested, you can head over to my-jug.org for more details or give me a way to get in touch with you and I’ll do that.

Wesak Day Outing

It’s funny where photography leads you. It’s been years since I’ve last been to a place of worship - *any* place of worship. I’ve always been a person to question anything and everything, probably to the point of being plain unhealthy.

Well anyway, yesterday was Wesak Day and I ended up in the Maha Vihara Buddhist temple in Brickfields. It was tough for me because I really had no clue on what to shoot. I knew that if you go somewhere with no idea on what you wish to capture, you’ll probably end up with half-baked shots. I hope mine pass as half-baked.

More on Flickr of course.

Movie Marathon Weekend

Thank God for Rapidshare ;)

I’ve been spending some quality time with my laptop, watching movies. Streamyx has consistently managed a 150 kbp/s download which made me very happy. That also means roughly a few hours (or less) for a 700 mb file, incidentally, enough for roughly a movie show. Being the sad and lonely freak that I am, I’m gonna share what I watched. Here they are, in no particular order:

  • Episode 1 - 7 of Battlestar Galactica (sci-fi fans only)
  • 21 (recommended)
  • The Bucket List (could be better)
  • Children Of Men (avoid like the black plague)
  • The Mothman Prophecy (could be better)
  • Just Friends (recommended)
  • Prozac Nation (watch if you like gloomy movies that goes “wtf?!”)
  • The Forbidden Kingdom (watch if you like fantasy movies)
  • Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (recommended)

Yet to watch

  • Autumn Hearts
