Java For Centro

The JVM can no longer be distributed by Palm which sucks because Opera Mini is a Java application. I hope Palm considers enabling Java for Centro and all other future Palm smartphones. Google hard enough though and you can come up with a few hits on where to load a JVM into your Palm ;).

Crap, bug in Wordpress?

I can’t seem to delete double postings. Hmm…

Grandma’s Funeral

She passed away at the beginning of this year, right before the Chinese New Year celebrations. She has been bed ridden for sometime so I can’t say for sure whether or not I would’ve liked for her to continue being with us. It would’ve been selfish for wishing that. It pains the family that she’s no longer here with us now, but there is comfort in knowing that she’s moved on to a better place.

One of the motivation for getting a proper camera was to get good portraits for her to remember her by. Unfortunately, grandma couldn’t wait that long. A week before my trip back to my home town, she left us for good.

I couldn’t believe how little pics I took (most posted here are taken by my sis) of the actual service. I took plenty of snapshots of my cute nephew but nothing much of the funeral. I guess the fact that my frame of mind at that time was at its worst, coupled with the inability to decide whether its proper to point a lens at someone’s face at such an occasion had something to do with this. Looking back, I wish I had taken more pics. Much more.

Java 6 Update 10 - the super release

Excellent write up here - Chet Haase’s Blog: Consumer JRE: Leaner, Meaner Java.

Exciting features:

Seems to bring a whole lot of improvements for JRE users as opposed to developers, but it’s a good thing to Java overall. I can’t believe that the JRE has ballooned up to 12MB over the years. It’s still leaner that the 21MB .NET framework though, and the Java Kernel should bring it down to slightly over 5MB for most Swing applications. Here’s to hoping applets can take off after this ‘fix’.

A Few More Applications For My Centro

Added a few more applications to Centro:

  • DateBk6 (trial)
  • Resco Explorer
  • Butler (removed)

DateBk6 has a few features that I want, namely improved compatibility with the newer Palm PIMs and Outlook (birthdays, 32K memos, etc) but I’ll try it first to see if it’s worth the upgrade. I can’t sing enough praise for this little unassuming software. No where near the bloat of Agendus and less fancy UI, but it works really well for me. Love the ability to customize close to anything.

As for Butler, I’m mainly interested in the ability to act as an attention grabber via manipulating the LED and stuff. So let’s see if that and a few more added extras (to me) is worth the money.

It’s surprising but I’m finding that despite the gloomy outlook for Palm, looking at the forums seems to indicate that the phone indeed has taken off in the US. There are a whole lot of folks asking about opinions on the best software for it, what’s compatible and not, etc. It seems so far that both old time Palm users and also newbies are trying out this tiny, affordable Treo Centro. I still find it hard to believe that this little phone packs all the punch of its bigger brethren, and faster to boot.

I’m already starting to use the Palm Centro extensively for PIMs. Nothing comes close to beating a Palm in this. Nothing.
