Maxis Wireless Broadband - 18 Months Contract Period
October 30th, 2007 | by Bernie |I’ve recently seen first hand how Maxis treats its customers. First let me put things into context:
- Maxis offers wireless broadband for RM 98 for 3.6Mbps
- Because it is wireless, connection speed can get a wee bit inconsistent, depending on area
- Maxis offers ONLY a seven day trial period
- After which, you are required to continue the service for 18 months
- At the end of the 18 month contract, the service will AUTO-EXTEND for another 18 month unless you write in a month in advance
- There is no way of canceling your subscription should the 7 day trial period has lapsed
Now before you say caveat emptor, most of the time, the dealer or sales person pushing this service does not in anyway highlight this which is unfair. The terms and conditions of the subscription is also not made apparent to the consumer.
Basically, Maxis is banking on the consumer’s naiveness to rake in big money from its broadband business. A friend of mine recently highlighted this to me (he wishes to terminate the subscription due to the paltry download speed of 7 to 8kbps). Judging from the post at the blog section of The Star, and Google search results, it looks like problems with Maxis broadband isn’t something new.
If anyone know how to resolve this quickly, please feel free to let me know via the comments section. Also, spread the word to any of your friends that is thinking about signing up with Maxis Wireless Broadband. At the very least, try out within the trial period of 7 days, cancel if anything goes wrong.
I’m wondering though, what happens to the poor consumer who suffers connection issues a few months down the line. Is it fair to have such a contract that puts the consumer in such a disadvantage? See the screenshots below of Maxis Wireless Broadband Terms & Conditions.

Buyers beware!

I’ms surprised no comments yet under this topic.
Yeah Maxis sucks big time, connection NOT consistently available. I’ve signed up for 10 months now and I’ve always wanted to cancel it but what to do? There’s this contract…
So I was thinking to transfer ownership to 3rd party and GUESS WHAT? They impose a fee of $50 for such txns.
How greedy can a corporation be.

Sorry you had to face this issue as well. I guess customer’s needs are not no. 1 with a lot of corporations in Malaysia.

yes indeed MAXIS IS MISLEADING its customers.. i would say CHEATING!!!
earlier the contract was 12 months… now they say its 18 months…
and they will continue to cheat us as long as we all keep quiet individually…
MAXIS is screwing around with the consumer…. lets organise a walk in to maxis HQ centre in KLCC and ask for service cancellation. I have been using this stupid service since june 2007 and till now, i have called maxis 10 times…. they have come and change my modem 3 times… and i have even challeged them to come to my office to prove that their 3G is working… but till now…no one with B#LLs came..
they keep sending in their 3rd party installers to rectify the problem which cannot be rectified… because… its not a PROBLEM… its their stupid service level… thats all they have…
i am actually posting this blog using timenet dialup as my unrealiable maxis broadband modem is set next to me without any data connection, sitting like a lemon…!!!
if people can make a change on who runs the country… i think we can change how MAXIS treats its customers and tell everyone how the are cheating the public.
all their stupid advertisements are showing kbps, which equals to KILO-BITS-PER-SECOND…. that means what ever you getting you divide by 8, then you will get the actual THROUGHPUT speed which comes to about 30 to 40 kilo BYTES per second.
8 kilo BITS = 1 kilo BYTE
1000 kilo BYTE = 1 MEGA BYTE
so we are actually get crawling speed from these MAXIS and STREAMYX….. might as well just get dial up … which comes up to the same speed….
MALAYSIAN ISPs all BL**DY LIARS
p/s: but among the cheating ediots, i would say Streamyx is the better jack!!!
Dont go for any wireless 3G or 4G broadband…it just WONT WORK IN MALAYSIA.
STICK to WIRES till further notice. its for your own good. else you will end up poor and frustrated.

That is why it is very important to read the fine prints, especially here in Malaysia. However, demonstrating would do you no good. I’m sure there are other ways of sticking up to them. Why try approaching a small claims court or the media?
As a consumer, choose to spend your money wisely and advise your friends to do the same. FYI, I’ve never been a customer of Maxis and I don’t plan to.

Maxis Broadband is really sucks !Currently, I using the RM 68 plan..Although I leave in Penang, Tanjung Bungah the connection is really bad. When in their maxis branch, they show how fast their speed using their own speed test server can achieve up to 340kbps. But I test using other test speed website , such as tmnet speedometer or the http://www.numion.com . The maxis broadband only shows 30kbps…hehehheh . This is really cheating man.

Only EDGE connection in Port Dickson. Can barely open up Google website.
I signed up during the recent PCFair, never mention to me about 7-day cooling off period. Now I’m tied with 18 months contract.
Maxis sucks big time!!!
Surfers beware!!!

Ouch, sorry to hear that Sang Gagak. I really don’t know what else can be done though. Maxis is a pretty good brand name and well, Malaysians generally are suckers for brand names. Personally, I can’t say much about their service, was never a customer of theirs.

I think it’s best to raise complaints to the customer support personnel at Maxis, then threaten to terminate unless they don’t fix it. If you are unhappy, persist to terminate the line. They’ll allow it. If things don’t go your way, Google MCMC’s complaint form. http://www.mypdacafe.com is a good place for these kind of issues. You’ll get plenty of help there.

Yes, definitely as a wifi service provider, Maxis yet consider very ‘weak’ and unstable partner in most of land, even in KL, kepong, which highlited 3G area. I tested my self.
If you insist to use Maxis, don’t go too far and you should sit ‘properly’ just under their umbrella, dont go downstair, their service is only good from ground floor.
Don’t use Maxis Broadband, unless you want to contribute your money to them, eventhough you do not have a choice. Maxis only behave like big master in this area, but they are not, in fact.
Choose wired, even streamyx is better (pls select higher RM77/88/99 pack) you will living longer and happier.
This is my experience so far.

I have been actually enticed by the sales talk strategy in other words cheating or hidden charges. Our perception is,maxis is the best server among other service provider company.Which I never think cheating will exist.During promotional offer last December16,2007,according to sales represintative for only RM98/month with first 3 months free of charge.I could not actually read the terms & conditions of the contract because I am a far sighted vision,I had totally trust the words of reliable company, which in the first place I shouln’t do that. Now,I’m over paying for RM118.75 even with out using telephone access. This is a scam damn!
