I know first hand that the Treo 650 has good build quality. As long as it is not dropped or scratched with other hard elements, the Treo 650 can last years. My girl friend just sold off hers after a few years and it was still mint. However, things are taking a different twist with the Treo 680, looks like the D-pad can wear off after only 5 months. See the following pictures:

A complaint has been sent to Palm regarding this. Will Palm’s excellent support come through this time? Original post at MyPDACafe.

Mine’s still fine after 9 months
Good to hear that it’s an isolated case. I imagine you use your Treo quite extensively during the day?
Dpad too. I hardly use the stylus.
Aha, my case ah. Yeah, like Palmdoc, I’m a heavy thumb-board / d-pad user. Hardly ever need the stylus for touch screen work.
I have posted a negative feedback on Palm’s e-survey form (url sent to my email a/c), and till date, no one from Palm Support has called. I think I’ll give them a call tomorrow to chase up, but just FYI, the last tech I spoke to did mention that the button should not have worn out so quickly - I guess 5 mths was too fast, should’ve been 12 mths and 7 days (like my bloody Linksys WRT54G router)..
Yes, the post was referring to your case. I was really surprised that it only took 5 months to wear out the D-pad. I reckon anyone that uses the Treo would rarely reach for the stylus since one-hand navigation is so good on it.
Hearing doc say that his unit didn’t wear off even after 9 months is certainly a relief. It’s bad enough it has an outdated OS.
I heard the new Treos could be manufactured by Asus. Hope those have good build quality.
I thought Invertec’s the chosen one?
Haven’t had the time to call the Palm techs yet. Been busy with work. Will update you once I know what they plan to do next with my case..
Thanks.
