Love-Hate with Windows Mobile

Love:

  • lots of choices
  • latest greatest hardware
  • lots of wireless connectivity options (3.xG, EDGE, WiFi, BT2)

Hate:

  • Slooooooooooooooow (even when overclocked to 520MHz!)
  • Always need to keep an eye on storage space
  • Needs reboot daily or once everyday to keep it 'healthy'
  • Activesync can fail once in a while and when that happens, good luck figuring out the problem :(

Palm, wake up. Get your latest OS out now. Get WiFi added now. Put in your loveable Treo keyboard. I'll buy your device the second it hits the shelves. I promise. Nokia, your devices has hope too. But dump (or improve) your Symbian signing process and get your development tools together so that 3rd party software will flood the market. Oh, and touch screen please.

Some one needs to give Windows Mobile some competition...

  1. Ha… Ha… Microsoft still the big boss in PDA. I am waiting for next gen UMPC. It will be smaller and longer battery life. And lot more powerful than PDA. :)

  2. Sadly, the daily reboot thing is no longer something exclusive to the WM platform. Even my GarnetOS-based Treo 680 needs to be rebooted once a day to keep its dbcache refreshed and to maintain the stability of the device.

Only my previous SymbianOS-based E61 never needed regular reboots.

  3. Am really hoping to hold on to my Treo 680 till either ALP or PalmLinux arrives. If it takes too long, I may have no choice but to surrender and get a WM6 device instead, especially since WM devices generally come with superb connectivity features.. :-(

  4. After spending a long couple of months with a WM 5 phone, I long for Palm’s speediness. That’s all I can say. I use to be able to steal a moment to enter a reminder or calendar entry on my Palm during near standstill traffic or before a traffic light goes green but with my current phone, I won’t even bother.

To turn on the phone and wait for it to become responsive takes a few seconds. Wanna launch the PIM software? A solid 5 seconds or more. To enter data… nah just don’t bother :)
