How to get the new Yahoo Mail Beta without an invite!

Hot on the heel’s of yesterday’s posting on how to get Window’s Live Mail, today there’s a tip on Vasanth Dharmaraj’s Blogs on how to get a Yahoo! Mail Beta. I tried it, the tip works. It involves changing of locale to that of UK. After you’ve got access to the beta mail service, I changed back to my own locale (Yahoo! Singapore) and it still works.

Get Windows Live Mail

What’s new?

  1. 2GB of storage
  2. New AJAX interface

Click on the following link to get one:

http://www1.imagine-msn.com/minisites/sweepstakes/mail/register.aspx

One caveat - you’ll need to use Internet Exlporer (gasp!). Failure to do so would mean unable to complete the request and to make things worse, Live Mail needs IE for the nifty AJAX interface.

P/S: Even though some where in the link, it says that you’re only requesting for Live Mail (meaning there’s no guarantee you’ll get access), I’ve already passed the link to 3 other people, and all have succeeded in getting Live Mail.

A sentence to sum up GTD

Jason Womack: The “writing it down-getting it done link

“What if, I started asking, “I could forget about something for now, and then be reminded of it when appropriate?

Now that, is the ultimate goal of GTD (in my humber opinion) and why I use a PDA. Anytime anything pops up, I just right them down and set an alarm. Every few days, these short tasks and appointments get reviewed. Granted, this is a very over-simplification but it’s these basics that helped me so much.

The next Treo?

Reported by Treonauts and Engadget. No hardware specs yet (bummer). What they do know is that this device runs on the Windows Mobile OS (another bummer!).Update: At the same time, Brighthand says there’s no such thing.

How do you treat a waiter?

It’s important because according to this article (USATODAY.com - CEOs say how you treat a waiter can predict a lot about character), it’s a window to your character. Maybe waiter is too specific - it’s how you treat anyone that is not of a higher position that you are. It’s normal for us to act all goodie-goodie when facing a superior. So if you feel you need to know someone, just see how they treat seemingly less important people.

Reflecting after I read the article, I couldn’t agree more.

Faster OSS downloads - choose the proper mirror

If open-source software is your thing (it should be, stop pirating ;) ), then you’ll tend to be like me - downloading OSS stuff quite frequently. Usually, OSS comes from sourceforge.net. But sourceforge is only a website, it doesn’t provide downloads. Insteads, it directs you to a list of mirror servers for the actual download. So how do you make sure you get the fast download speeds? Easy actually, choose the closest server to you. But there’s a catch, you’d have to balance it with countries that are known to be fairly broadband capable.

What do I mean? Take for example me, being in Malaysia, there are 3 mirrors from nearby countries - Indonesia, Singapore, Japan, etc (countries in Asia). Nearest mirror would be either Singapore or Indonesia, but neither could beat Japan (which is compartively farther than either). This is logical since Japan’s is the most broadband capable out of the 3. Hence, my choice of mirror server for the past year or so has been Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology’s server (Ishikawa, Japan).

If you’re in Malaysia and downloads open-source software frequently, try that server. I often get 50Kb/s downloads.
